16/05 - 59 Violets - The Sesh @ The Linnet and Lark
The 59 Violets have been absent from the live scene for what suddenly feels like an age. Thankfully remedied tonight with the debut of their brand new drummer and they remind us just how good they are. Songs such as Dirty Water and Yeah still stand out, along with the new material showcased, as some of the strongest around. There was certainly an air of refreshed vigour about the performance. Very much a welcome return for a much loved band.

It's the turn of the 59 Violets next. I've seen them before, but I missed most of their set, just catching Satellite at the end of their set. I had them pegged as a straight up, new-wave kinda band, but Yeah Yeah Yeah and Dirty Water, their opening tracks, completely confounded my expectations.
They weigh in with meaty saw-mill riffs and growling basslines which owe more to Soundgarden and Mudhoney than something like The Jam, say.
Before they start on the next track, Digsy tells the crowd that the usual guitarist is ill and has been temporarily replaced. Well, they don't drop a beat, and I have to admit, had it not been mentioned I wouldn't have noticed. I'm a sucker for detail, me.
Riverbed is a great clunking track that keeps kick starting like a stolen motorbike, backed up by a throbbing hypnotic bassline.
In true John Peel style, were going to start this song off at the wrong speed and then change...don't worry, we're professional, Digsy says, before launching into Fields, which signals another style switch.

It has an Eastern kinda groove, jangly guitars and pulsating rhythms. I have to stop and ask myself: Why aren't this band three albums in and touring America, kicking arse across the continent as they go? Well, can anyone tell me?
The next track, Thugg' even has the audacity to throw in some slap bass. Now usually a band using slap bass is enough to send me scurrying into the corner in a fit of embarrassment, but they resist the temptation to descend into RHCP style octave slapping and popping, and just use it as another sound to bolster the song, rather than making it the focus of the song.
Satellite is next, and it moves into the new-wave style that I was expecting from the offset, and then they unleash a scream-tastic cover of Eleanour Rigby that replaces the sparseness of the original with something altogether more sinister.
59 Violets are great at covering a wide range of styles within a small set, while never sounding disjointed. They give nods to whole host of bands, but at no point do they sound like anyone other than themselves. Good fuckin' stuff.

Saturday 8th October - The Mardous and Fifty-Nine Violets at Yo-Yo
By David Thurlby

The Yo-Yo night at The Welly Club on Beverley Road is slap bang in the middle of its most hectic period what with all the students back in place and the host of bands that are lined up to play it's Live Lab. Tonight saw a band from just across the bridge share a small and compact stage with some up and coming chancers from down south.
Barton's own Fifty- Nine Violets are the type of band who hold a unique stance in the current climate of this countries music scene.
Photos By Michelle Dee
A scene that is overwhelmed by haircuts and has an emphasis of style over substance; preferably of the sinister keyboard led 80's variety.

There are no skinny ties or juddering drumming on show tonight. Just raw power in the shape of their punchy rock orientated set, which is characterised by Digsy's accomplished vocals. They come across sounding as lucid and concise as ever, quite rare for a rock vocal.
The crowd reaction is extremely positive as well, which is no mean feat considering the predominately Indie clientele, although the flock of Bartonians were always going to give them some boozy additional support. Dirty Water is an exceptional riff-heavy highlight, performed with a lot of zest and conviction, from a band who are quite evidently playing the type of music they adore.Their own take on The Beatles Eleanor Rigby is a delightfully menacing way to close.

THURSDAY 6/10Fifty-Nine Violets
Thee Box @ Hull University

The first band on was Fifty Nine Violets and this band is excellent. If you get the chance, go and see them. They manage to combine Indie and Punk so well you can’t see the join. They played tracks from their album and finished with a brilliant rendition of the Who’s ‘Won’t Get Fooled Again’.
Laura Nerv

SUNDAY 25/09Fifty-Nine Violets @ The Lamp
I was very pleased to find that Fifty-nine Violets were playing. The more I hear of this band, the more I like them. My particular favourite of theirs is ‘Dirty Water’, although ‘Thugg’ is growing on me too. I love their version of the Beatles’ ‘Eleanor Rigby’. They are sort of Indie Rock with Punk attitude, like Stone Roses meets the Buzzcocks! Once again, an excellent performance and I even got a copy of their superb album ‘Prime Numbers’.

THURSDAY 1/09Fiftynine Violets@ The Adelphi, Hull

59 Violets, now much beloved of lensman Neal Osbourn and deservedly so. If you want a lazy comparison, here is one: The Stoogies... They can have a less lazy comparison in my next review and there will be one- they are incendiary at times and worth repeat viewings which they'll get from me.Sandman

'Lee Sounds/Raw Talent Unsigned Stage'
'Mean Fiddler Carling Weekend Leeds : Saturday'

FITY NINE VIOLETS are a more prosaic four bloke guitar band doing trashy punk with flagons of energy and sharp attitude. It’s simple, it’s tight, it stabs and jerks and the guy can carry a song from one end of the street to the other. The audience is small at first, but the energy gets more people stopping all the time. They don’t just do songs – they build a whole set with strong attacking guitar playing and the main man is cheery and communicative. There's a more than a shard of heavy metal in the Rutts-style punk. Neat.

Scarborough Beached Festival Sunday By Michelle Dee
By Michelle Dee
Photographs by Roland Standaert and Michelle Dee

Fifty Nine Violets - Having seen the Barton maestros more than a dozen times it is always a challenge to find new things to say about them. The first thing I noticed was that Andy the cheery drummer type was wearing his thisisull t-shirt.
The second thing I noticed was that bassist Bill had added a sticker to his instrument sporting the magic number 59. Now not many people know why the band are called 59 Violets, and not 39 or the more raunchy sounding 69, but as I have come to expect from Digsy and co. there is a story behind the number 59.

Apparently, and this is gospel told to me backstage at Scarborough whilst sipping at their complimentary lagers. Many moons ago, early in the bands history, the four men of Barton walked in to the warehouse that was to later become their rehearsal space.
On entering the wide-open place they came upon a wooden tray that had seemingly been abandoned on the floor of the building.
On the wooden tray sat many flowers, all individually potted up. On closer inspection the band identified the blooms to be of the Violet family.
After counting the flowers to satisfy some whim they concluded there were fifty-nine individual plants. From that day forward the band were known as the Fifty-Nine Violets.
Eager guitar licks from Chris opens Fields with easy style followed by Digsy's distinct vocals. Haphazard pogoing from the front man accompanies new song Satellite.
Crunching guitars blend with melodic free flowing bass lines, resounding tattoos are beaten out by Andy on kick and snare accompanied by rides and crashes as the band depict life and the struggle in an isolated town.
A backwater, in view of the bright lights of the big city, with its own fatalistic ideology built in every paving stone.

Once a place of significant historical value, with an importance that rivalled the city of Hull, Barton upon Humber is a joyless town with its heart ripped out; from the dearth of depression compounded by acres of apathy.
To their credit the band have not succumbed to the small town fug and become a credible if not formidable force on the local scene. The reaction from the Scarborough crowd for this hitherto unseen band was I am sad to report limited; pockets of cheers and applause confirmed that the Violets are a taste from that original place well worth acquiring

Aug 24 - Windum Earl / No Nothings, / 59 Violets
@ The Adelphi, Hull

The 59 Violets race through a set of derivative yet enjoyable songs. While it’s hard to see where this could all lead, it doesn’t stop it bringing a smile to the assembly of people. They close the set with a cover of Eleanor Rigby and credit to them as they try to make it different but so many bands have attempt to rock up Beatles songs that it gets a bit passé.

NEW ALBUM REVIEW

GUERILLA GIGGERS IN "LET'S MIX METAL AND JAZZ" OUTRAGE
FIFTY NINE VIOLETS "Prime Numbers" (All Out Records)
Since their last offering, it's all got more pointed, nasty and, well, good. Now flirting more obviously with speed metal stylings, so it's all a bit like The Sweet signing up with Nine Inch Nails. Some of the crankier stuff is favourite here, "Thugg" living up to its name with a brutally deliberate bass and concrete cored riffs while the 'space mix' of "Yeah Yeah Yeah" does the insane thing of chilling out in a jazzy n dubbed zone and ends up sounding like The Specials trapped in Hugh Hefner's recurring acid-drenched nightmares, very weird, very cool and if that's very you, go here...

"Fifty nine violets: Prime Numbers"

Release Date: 03/2005
Label: All Out Records

When I first approached this album, I was sceptical to say the least. Boasts of being “not your usual run of the mill kinda band” and using “lyrics from a psycotic civilized society” made me grimace and think of every other band that uses odd percussion and whacked out lyrics. I’m not quite sure why that was, but it turned out to be a completely unfounded fear.
To begin with, 'Yeah Yeah Yeah” reminded me of the last few years of strokes-sque bands, but what is this? I thought, I actually like it. 'Yeah Yeah Yeah' is the handshake on the way in, short as it is, you’re thrown straight into what is the standout track on this album for me, 'Dirty Water'
Take a pint of Britpop and churn it out new and fresh. Add the Gallaghers, without the crap they’re writing these days, and you have 'Dirty Water'. Catchy guitar riffs, powerful vocals and inspiring lyrics. Sets the benchmark for an album that is consistently, unarguably brilliant. Other stand out tracks for me were 'Silver sea', 'time part two' and the jazzy space mix of 'yeah yeah yeah', fantastic.
“The Fifty Nine Violets: are nothing short of one of the best bands in the Humber region:”
That might seem arrogant, but I’d agree with them.
Fiftynineviolets have 2 EPs and the 11 track album 'Prime Numbers' on general release on All out

59 Violets - Prime Numbers

By Daniel Laney (www.thisisull.com)

It's always tricky to write about a group you know nothing about. You can't call upon your knowledge of the bands touring antics, nor can you compare previous stand out material to the CD you're reviewing, in short its just your appreciation of music that can determine the finished written piece.Although I knew nothing about 59 Violets until hearing The Sesh CD I do know it's probably safe to say they're the best thing to come out of Barton on Humber in the last... well, probably ever! This album is filled to the brim with great rock 'n' roll tracks all of them contributing fully to the particularly unique sound the album has to offer.
The opening track sets the pace of what is to follow. Throughout the album a crunchy guitar sound welcomes you to the world of 59Violets and introduces its friend the bass to show you where you can hang your jacket. Catchy hooks from the offset allows for many days of humming and tapping.Track two Dirty Water, has a riff that sounds like it has been pulled from the depths of a muddy river, which aptly fits the title. Again the fat rock 'n' roll guitars ensure all can have a good time, sounding like early 90's Oasis, its very easy to get your rocks off to 59 Violets nihilistic sound. This 'lil' Piggy takes a slower approach than the usual fast pace, but by doing this we can appreciate what vocals the group has to offer.
A cross between Bono and Ian Brown, lyrics are bent, sneered and wrapped around the guitar licks to create a sleazy rock 'n' roll ambience. A beauty of a build up allows the whole group to show what they have to contribute to the CD.
A sound that reminds me of The Music the vocals again still have a hint of Bono and an early 90's Manchurian band. Silver Sea proves to us as the listener that Prime Numbers was recorded in the summer. You can imagine the group sitting outside Fairview Studios in between takes swigging a beer, smoking cigarettes and being still positively enthusiastic about the record. All though not as hardcore as previous tracks an anthem is born.Thugg is personally my favourite track from Prime Numbers. A kick to the face is given by the bass as you fight back wanting more it becomes apparent that this song is a winner. The jerky guitar chords remind me of Hong Kong Fooey, each time they hit a smile spreads from ear to ear.If you're like me and make driving compilations to ensure a fulfilling automobile experience, why not try and place Thugg as the opening track to your CD or tape.Fields is a complete contrast to the previous track, however calling back on its 90's Manchester band sound and the whinge of Bono allows comfort when listening. A sound has obviously been achieved by 59 Violets consisting of ballsy rock 'n' roll and psychedelic Stone Roses swagger. What you need me to do? is going to have a place in your head for a few days after listening to this beautiful passionate feel good track, all of this with a melody that floats like a leaf on a breeze.Steal From Me is a combination of the previous styles mentioned. This time a Charlatans and Bluetones influence is more apparent. A trip back to the baggy era is created by the riff laden guitar track with beats that resemble Mani's contribution from Fools Gold. If you love your indie rock 'n' roll then you'll adore Steal From Me. A no nonsense gem.Yet again a fat bass line decides the songs atmosphere on the track Time Part Two, by now its easy to appreciate just how much thought has gone into this album to create an ultimate audio experience. The song is a funky track to bob up and down to and creates the feeling that you are the bomb when listening to this track. Apart from the fat bass that opens the track no instrument stands out to dominate, it's just a wall of sound that hits you as dominant force. When the drums pick up speed towards the end you realise that you have been listening to something you don't want to stop.An air guitarist's best friend (apart from their guitar) invites you into She's a Ride. This riff shows that 59 Violets return true to their form of predecessors from this CD and gives us another fast and short rock explosion. She's a Ride is yet another one for your driving experience.Riverbed is a more 60's style track and has elements of The Beatles drug induced art sound. A heavier fuller sound than the 60's bands had to offer this song is a great example of modern rock music and proves that there is still credibility in the world of music.
With lyrics such as another sunny day to stay inside the house shows a darker and seedy side to 59 Violets, but up until now on the record no track can have fault tagged on it and with a diverse and intelligible approach River Bed is just another dig to keep you interested. Finally a remix of the opening track Yeah Yeah Yeah closes the album. Many may argue that by doing a remix of a song to put on your groups album is a synonym for not being bothered to write another track. But this remix is absolutely perfect for a chill out on a Sunday afternoon. It sparks an image of being sat on a roof top garden looking down over the cities summer streets. This song just shows us the musical diversity 59 Violets are willing to try and each time thumbs up for every attempt. If you really like music in general then there should be no excuse as to why you don't own this hallmark on Hull's and the East Ridings music scene. Brilliant!

Fifty Nine Violets – “Prime Numbers” CD 11/40:31

(shredding radio review)
Jangly, primal Brit-rock that’s damn full of itself, using similes like “The Only Ones taking it up the arse from Bootsy Collins” in describing their own sound. The economical and buzzy first track, “Yeah Yeah Yeah,” with similar energy to the Original Sins, was headed for the oldies section in search of vintage hard rock, but as the record continues they get diverted and end up buying a Hoodoo Gurus record instead. They are not at all like Sweet having a love-in with NIN despite what you might have heard. What I got was a poorly engineered demo by a band in need of more songs, especially since the best song is an out of character remix of “Yeah Yeah Yeah” that flows like Consolidated. That’s what they should shoot for.

Prime Numbers by Fifty Nine Violets Album [11 Tracks]

GIGS UNLIMITED

A slight smile appears on my face as I hear a faint glimmer of what could be a guitar riff off a ‘Kings of Leon’ track when first listening to opening track ‘Yeah Yeah Yeah’, that glimmer fades after about five seconds but my smile doesn’t...Giving the rest of the CD a listen it’s not hard to spot influences from the likes of ‘Kasabian’ and ‘Oasis’ especially in the vocals but with a looming shadow of the Granddaddy ‘Stone Roses’. This band, who have only been together for two years have already earned themselves a rock status that they’ve married with melodies to rival the best.At a first swift listen it would be all too easy, not to mention lazy to peg this band down into one genre of music, lets say indie-rock, however it would be very wrong. Hints of the 60’s can be found in the ‘Hendrix’ type guitar riffs present in ‘Time part two’, whilst growling bass lines in ‘Thugg’ match the name of the track to its fast paced and aggressive sound effortlessly. Quite frankly I’m loving ‘Fifty Nine Violets’ and so should you, this album will without a doubt be donning my collection and due to its chameleon like quality I’ll happily be bringing it out on every occasion possible.

The Sesh - Various Hull Heroes
By Daniel Laney (www.thisisull.com)

A long awaited Hull bands compilation CD can only be reviewed track by track. After listening to this really well compiled album by The Sesh's very own Mark Page, it was apparent that it had to be stripped down song by song to highlight a little bit about each band currently in the Hull area.(There are two tracks from Fifty Nine Violets.)

59 VIOLETS - Thugg
First impressions of this track are heavy, heavy, heavy. An attention grabber from the start this garage rock-sounding group would be the perfect soundtrack to drive to. The bass drives the song throughout its entirety whilst high pitch screeching guitars put a slant on the fat riff causing a jerk reaction every time the chord is hit.
The song is brilliant, sleazy and seedy it has you nodding from the beginning.

59 Violets - Silver Sea (Southside Freedom Fighters Mix)
A completely different way at looking at 59 Violets music. Different to Thugg, this remix reminds my me of the electro styles created by The Faint, you can imagine this track to be used as an advert for producing the diversity of music offered by the BBC, however it just proves the ever growing different styles available in Hull.

FIFTY NINE VIOLETS - Prime Numbers - (DEMO)

www.highvoltage.org.uk

The energy for rocking out is clear from this demo by Linconshire band Fifty Nine Violets. With guitar riffs that could have been lifted straight from any Motley Crue track they have found a sound which has real appeal, and must translate to a superb amp-destroying live experience. However, much of this is merely eluded to by this collection of songs, which are hurt more than anything by quite poor production, which leaves the vocals as a murmur in the background of the pure sound which symbolises the band.It almost feels like they knew that the rhythm, especially the pounding drumming on Yeah Yeah Yeah, is their strongest feature, so they've turned it right up and left everything else in to make up the numbers. Again, this is probably not as much of a problem live, but Fifty Nine Violets may find themselves having to adapt songs for recording, the opposite of many band’s predicaments.

The 59 Violets - Prime Numbers

By Steve Rudd (thisis'ull.com)

First things first, a bit of vital number crunching: the debut album from North Lincolnshire's va-va-vooming 59 Violets four-piece is 40 minutes long and spread over 11 fantastic songs.
Each and every track is moulded around some superb melodies, as these boys wield both the pop sensibility and high-octane energy of The Wildhearts.Opening tune Yeah Yeah Yeah provides a perfect introduction to the band's music, being a thoroughly full-tilt and riff-heavy spark of sheer rock 'n' roll excellence.Dirty Water - lifted from the band's 2nd EP - proceeds to prove that Digsy and Chris on are both more than capable of providing some truly sublime guitar work (aswell as sharing out vocal duties), the brilliantly crafted verse-chorus based songs bolting out of a similar stable to the music of Jet and the Kings of Leon. So there. The 59 Violets, who regularly play in Hull (and have previously supported the fame-and-fortune-fondling likes of The Levellers, Malibu Stacey, The 5,6,7,8's and 10,000 Things) make the most of all the best elements ever unearthed in rock 'n' roll folds, as their This 'Lil Piggy tune taps into retro rock heaviness and sounds to owe much to the influence of The Who and Led Zeppelin.
The brilliant production values that buoy up Silver Sea stand proud not just through this song but through the entire album, as the awesomely angular guitar riff of She's A Ride ultimately supports the remix of Yeah Yeah Yeah to the hilt. Such a remix of the opening song actually closes the album, and compared to the aforementioned original version, the beautifully conceived remix is a far groovier and gloriously tripped-out affair that emanates from an atmospheric soundscape introduction.
Indeed, these guys also - from a musical point of view - share much in common with bands such as The Music and The Stone Roses in their more sultry moments. This album, at the time of writing, isn't totally finished. The officially finalised version - that is due for release either very late 2004 or early 2005 - might even include one or two more remixes of their own songs. Still, even if the album is released as it stands, there is more than enough reason to get very excited by the material therein. Please excuse the timeworn cliche, but I can't resist gushing that The 59 Violets rock. They really do.. pure and simple. 5/5

LIVE REVIEWS

The Music Man, Hull + (The Applewhites + Kohiba + The Vels) - 24/06/05

Tonight's headliners were Hull's favourite adopted sons, Fifty-Nine Violets from Barton. They have been fully paid up affiliates and highly respected members of the scene for some time now. Not only do they play a mean tune but they are involved with providing sound expertise/equipment and booking bands for other venues.
With one guitar down by the end of the second song, Digsy the usually laid back front man, did his up most to lay his replacement axe to rest during Fields. As it was, at the end of the song yet another string lay quivering in terror, at the edge of the stage. Moments earlier it had been cruelly ripped out of the instrument, but even this casualty didn't deter the lead singers frenzied playing.
I watched, with anarchic glee, as he proceeded to scrape the panic stricken strings of the flashing turquoise guitar along the mic stand. Over the last few months Digsy has become more and more destructive on stage. But don't worry he hasn't succumbed to the madness off rock n roll excess, nor is he filled with such vitriol that he has to push himself to more and more outrageous actions to satisfy the inner monster.
No, what is occurring is perhaps even more disturbing. He is fully aware and carries out these explosive outbursts like he does the rest of his life, with a huge grin and a sparkly demeanour.
If the kids want angry rock 'n' roll then The Fifty-Nine Violets will deliver more than they bargained for, much more.
Needless to say the set was awesome and featured Penny Black, Thugg and Time and more Violets standards. Yeah yeah yeah stopped abruptly and appeared to have been cut short. It would be a landmark moment to see the Southside Freedom Fighters merge, with the band incarnation live on stage. To demonstrate categorically that you can have widely differing musical styles and tastes without losing musical credibility.
Chords like sirens emanate from Chris's guitar as more carefully timed eruptions leave the mic stand leaning at a precarious angle half off the stage.
Look towards the back and you will see Andy pausing, giving another roguish smile before embarking on more snare crashing, cymbal smashing merriment.
Then there's Bill on bass; the only bass player that comes near to him for sheer god like genius is Mad Mike of Shindigg fame; now sadly left. Slapping and popping then taking the bass lines for ten-mile hikes, just try and take your eyes of Digsy for a second and watch this guy play. He lends the sound life and a vivacity that can't fail to impress.
The Fifty-Nine Violets produced a performance that was both totally engrossing and entertaining; an electric stage presence that's tighter than Bush's grip on Tony's dangly bits.

The Mystery Jets, Park And Ride, 59 Violets at The Adelphi 21/5/05

It's not often I get a Saturday night when I am not working myself so when I was asked to go and review this gig it solved any quandries of what I was going to do with my evening off, a couple of miles down the road Maximo Park where also playing on an NME tour but I stuck with local promoter Dean's Under The Influence gig. I have no idea what the other gig was like but this one was brilliant.
Opening band 59 Violets hail from Barton and the only time I had heard them was on Steve Lamac's show on the radio so I wanted to see if they lived up to their recorded material when playing live. Well they did, easily overcoming a couple of broken strings and a wayward guitar strap they stormed through a powerful set, they play high energy indie guitar rock with attitude and it was not until their last but one song did I think they sounded like anyone else which is quite an impressive feat. If I had to try and compare them to another band it would have to be The Who in their heyday but brought upto date, 59 Violets played like they meant it tonight but they never forgot they where there to enjoy themselves and entertain the crowd and they seemed to do both easily.

MONDAY 2/05/05 - Sweet-n-Sour @ The Sillouette Club, Hull (ALL DAYER)

Next was a rare early slot, for one of the most accomplished bands on the local circuit. The Fifty- Nine Violets played early on because they had to drive to Rotherham for another gig that day.
After all the hard work and many gigs it'll be a cold day in Adelphi when you don't see the best from the Barton lads. The album Prime Numbers released earlier this year is packed full of fantastic songs.
Today they treated the growing crowd to a great rendition of almost the whole album. Stand out tracks are still Fields, Silver Sea and Dirty Water but the final flourishes of Yeah Yeah Yeah were awesome. Remixes, done by rhythm guitarist Chris, recently received airplay in Australia; it seems OZ is down with the Southside Freedom Fighters. A nine track CD featuring some new original tracks and remixes is available from the band and sounds especially good, played at full volume, whilst driving through open country.

TUESDAY 22/02/05 - Hull Adelphi +(Thee Unstrung, Blueslide Circle, Park & Ride)

Almost stealing the show tonight are the two middle children of the night, Park and Ride and the 59 Violets. The crowd are starting to warm up and the Adelphi is filling up. The Violets storm through a riff kicking set with “This Little Piggy” and riotous hooligan themed anthem “Thug”.

SWEET & SOUR @THE WELLY CLUB, HULL,:- Thursday 19 August.(The 5,6, 7,8's, Fifty Nine Violets, The Morphines.)

One could compare the sound of the 59 Violets to a French maids memoirs- dirty. Singer ‘Digsy’, sporting a rather fetching tank top, led the charge of ‘the Violets’ rock and roll assault. The term ‘solid musicianship’ is one that is used frequently in music reviews but it is decisively fitting in this case. With ‘Digsy’ chewing through the lyrics like a gravel-spitting messenger, the instrumentation seethed bluesy riffs and the gritty swagger of a bastard hippy love child of late 70’s rock and early 90’s baggy. The 59 Violets provided a more mature outlet than The Morphines but this is not to say that there was anything safe about the act. This was pounding Rock and Roll at its best and left me feeling like I’d taken a punch to the ribs. With a sustained audience from the previous act, the assured performance which ensued, ensured that the popular Hull group, like a dependable friend, didn’t let anyone down.

THE WELLY CLUB, HULL,:-Thursday 19 August. (The 5,6,7,8's ,Fifty Nine Violets, The Morphines)

This is the second time in two weeks that I've reviewed 59 Violets, but it's not getting boring. If anything, they're demonstrating what a hardworking band they are. And the hard work's paying off. This is the biggest stage I've seen them play on and tonight they play the tightest set I've heard them play.
In The Welly tonight, with the big stage, impressive lights and huge sound system, 59 Violets look and sound like a band who can really rock.
Their brand of riff orientated, melodic indie translates really well in tonight's setting and the crowd respond well.

JAZ BAR, HULL. -Tuesday, 10 August. (The Ludes, Fifty Nine Violets,The Mardous, The Applewhites)

59 Violets appear much more comfortable onstage, opening their set with a loud and clear "hello". Their tunes are ballsy and brash, but it's not all as straightforward as that. At one point they unleash an atmospheric gem which has a guitar tone to it that gives a definite nod to sitar music.
At times, 59 Violets really rock and are tight as spandex throughout their set. The bass is something of a secret weapon and is a constant, awesome, bowel loosening presence. They're on form tonight and deserve to be playing to a fuller audience.

Malibu Stacey / 59 VioletsThe Rokit @ Hull University
Favourites from across the river, 59 Violets, showed us, once again, just what they were made of. The four piece from Barton seem to be improving each time I see them. and tonight’s outing heard them sounding a lot fuller and rockier. They sometimes risk sliding into Stereophonics territory but thankfully we saw little sign of that this evening. After two demos bringing some success such as being featured on Radio One's unsigned website the band have now launched a full scale assault. Through a bit of cheek and balls (and actually being quite good you know!) they’ve landed themselves a support slot with the Levellers at the City Hall and as a result of selling loads of tickets the Levellers have given them their first ever festival date this summer. As the icing on the cake, they will be appearing live at the KC stadium as the entertainment for the City V's Scunthorpe match on March 13th, now they've made it! The Levellers, The Mutts, Fiftynine Violets at Hull City Hall-29th March 04
First up, four-piece 59 Violets looked like an indie band, though the classic rock sound that they magically created sounded to owe much to the likes of Led Zeppelin and The Who.The lead guitarist's riffs overwhelmingly dominated their sound to such an extent that the singer could barely be heard, but still the overall effect that these guys had was sensational. In the lead guitar stakes if nothing else, Jimmy Page has a serious contender..

Mark Joseph, Fifty Nine Violets,Blue Sand, Pave @ The Adelphi , Hull.

Barton’s 59 Violets were next up, and are another band with a sturdy stack of good tunes. Always enjoyable even in the stifling heat of the Adelphi. 59 Violets play great indie rock and a couple of the tunes are so infectious that even though you don’t know their name you’re singing them all night. This kind of genre can so often become boring by the end of a set but having been booked after one listen of their demo, they proved they can entertain right to the end.
